HUSAIN AKHTAR TRIUMPHS IN CANONS BY ELECTION

Harrow East Conservatives welcomed the election of Husain Akhtar as the new Councillor in Canons Ward at the by election yesterday.  The by election was held following the sad death of Janet Cowan, who had represented the area for many years.

The result of the election was:-

Husain Akhtar (Conservative)                      1,208                         56.5%
Richard Harrod (Labour)                                 389                         18.2%
Anne Diamond (Liberal Democrat)                  296                          13.9%
Marcello Borgese (Independent)                     182                           8.5%
Howard Studley (BNP)                                     56                           2.6%

Conservative majority                                      819

Husain Akhtar therefore held the seat for the Conservatives with a substantial majority. The turnout was 24% which was commendable given the very cold weather and the time of the year. The last time that a by election was held in Canons Ward the Conservative majority was only 87 votes so this demonstrates the extent of this victory.

Councillor Husain Akhtar commented, “I would like to thank the voters of Canons Ward for the confidence that they have shown in me. I pledge myself to work hard on their behalf for the benefit of the whole community and the people of Harrow in general.”

Bob Blackman, prospective Parliamentary Candidate for Harrow East, commented, “I warmly welcome this result and the election of Husain who will work hard for the local community. The Conservative Party locally is in good heart as we approach Christmas. Gaining more than half the vote in a by election is extremely difficult, particularly in such cold weather, and we can now look forward to further success in the forthcoming elections.”
